Whats Is Instagram and Instagram Followers?
Instagram is a hugely popular photo and video sharing application that runs on iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Windows platforms. Instagram has over 700 million registered users.
It has been called as one of the most influential social networks in the world.
Instagram which was launched in 2010, was acquired by Facebook in 2012.
The Instagram community is steadily growing still. Instagram can be accessed using the smartphone application or by the website. However, features offered by the site are limited.
Instagram Application & Features
The Home & Explorer Tabs
The Instagram application can be downloaded from the respective app store offered by Apple, Microsoft and Google’s Play store. All the applications share a similar look and feel.
You are required to create an account to use Instagram. However, you can also sign-up using your Facebook account, which is quite easy.
After doing so and setting up your profile, you are taken to the home tab. This is where you can see the posts made by the people you are ‘following.’ We shall get to that in detail.
This tab also shows a section on top of the screen to add or view ‘stories,’ short posts, videos or pictures posted by the people you follow, that will disappear in 24 hours.
You can add one for yourself as well. The next tab is the ‘explore’ tab.
This showcases public posts from the general Instagram community, and most probably match with the type of pictures that you posted or ‘liked.
How To Post A Story On Instagram ?
The next tab is the one with a ‘+’ sign, which allows you to post. This can be done from the gallery, or you can take one from the application at that very moment and post it.
You can also add 1 minute long videos. The part where Instagram actually shines comes after you add a picture.
You are given an entire array of gorgeous photo filters to choose from. There are about 32 filters available (!).
And these can be additionally customised, change to what extent they affect the picture.
Before this, you can crop, change the brightness, contrast and much more editing techniques to make sure that photo truly shines. After you have applied these and filters (or not), you can add a post description.
This is another place where App is great. You can add a hashtag (#) and a tag to your description, which makes it easier to find for the general public.
Once you click on a hashtag in a post on your home screen, you will be able to see a whole list of posts that share the same.
You can also tag your friends in the picture, and the next big thing is that you can geotag the post.
You can add the location where it was taken. Posting the file to Facebook or other platforms is also made easier by the Iapplication.
Notifications & Profile Tab
The next important tab, marked by a heart icon is the notifications. If your post has been liked, commented on or if you have been tagged or mentioned in a post, this is where you will see it.
Also, you can track the activity of the people you are following, using this tab. You can see the posts they liked.
The last tab is the Profile tab, where you can view all of your posts, tagged posts, view and edit your profile information including adding an avatar and a bio, other details et cetera.
Instagram also allows you to send private messages, called as the Instagram direct service.
‘Following’ & Followers on Instagram
Instagram uses a ‘following’ system. That is, you need to ‘follow’ profile, to see their posts in your home screen itself.
This is a useful feature to keep track of updates from the people you want to connect with.
Also, following is a unidirectional procedure; if you follow someone, your posts aren’t shown on their home screen until and unless they follow you. A feature to be noted here that is on Instagram is the account type.
Normally, an account is of the public type. In other words, posts made by them are public and can be seen by anyone. If a random user visits a public profile, they can see all the posts you have made. They can like and comment on these as well.
While this is okay for the general community, Instagram has made a feature available for the users who wish to have some privacy as well.
You can make your account a private one; which implies that random users can see your profile-the avatar and name, but none of your posts.
Your posts will be hidden from anyone who is not following you. And the best part is that you can decide if you should let someone follow you and see your posts.
To follow a private account, one must send a ‘follow request’ and only upon confirmation from the user will the other be able to follow them. But there is no such procedure for the public user.
Following or being followed by someone in Instagram implies that they can view all of your posts.
Followers can see, comment on, like, mention et cetera on your posts and message and chat with you by Instagram direct. Which means, if you need some privacy, a private account is a way to go.
